A Work Portfolio of Handmade Metal Sculpture/Décor

Please allow me to introduce myself.  I am David Woody, a metal artisan.  My work portfolio website, fxnmetal.com, is now live.  I invite you to browse through photos and descriptions of my metal sculpture/decor creations in the Product Portfolio section of my website.  Your questions about my work, using the Inquiry form in the Product Portfolio pages, are welcomed and encouraged.

My Background

Moving on from my business career, I have continued my interest of designing and fabricating metal sculpture/décor, which began when my father introduced me to welding various metals at a young age.

As a child, my daycare was my father’s automotive body shop and later his trailer fabrication business.  There were plenty of hands-on learning opportunities for a young boy in that environment.  I was not only exposed to and learned from my father’s technical skills but also those of the craftsmen he employed.  When my father retired in the late 60s, he turned his time to creating and selling metal sculpture.  By that time, I had developed a skillset of my own in designing and building metal sculpture and continued learning under his experienced tutelage.  I maintained interest and skills in metal sculpture throughout college and my business career.

My career in the energy industry was primarily in foreign operations.  My travels took me to many foreign lands and cultures.  I did not realize the benefit at the time, but those foreign lands and cultures turned out to be a valuable resource for artistic design diversity.

Fx N Metal’s Products

The metal sculpture/décor I design and fabricate falls into 4 general categories (themes); Functional, Natural, Spiritual/Wellness and Abstract.  The first letter of the categories is the first letter of the article number shown in the Product Portfolio section of the website.  F = functional, N = natural, etc…As evidenced in the Product Portfolio section of the website, these themes provide a wide choice of artistic topics to work with.

Product Materials

Brass, steel and copper sheet, bar and wire are my primary materials of construction.

All product material is cut and fabricated into finished metal sculpture/décor by hand in my Houston area workshop.  There are no automated or computer-aided technologies used.  Unless noted otherwise, no plated or automated cut materials are used.  All finished products are coated with a rugged clear finish and are designed for interior display only.

Some products contain minerals, fossils and rocks with metal sculpture built around them to highlight their natural distinction and beauty.  As examples, see Articles No. N003 & S006 on the Product Portfolio pages.  A friend involved with Houston Gem & Mineral Society gave me a guided tour of the 2025 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show where I acquired several mineral, fossil, and rock samples for incorporation into my metal sculpture/décor designs.

Product Design

I collect ideas from the natural and manmade world around me, my travels, photos, and other sources of inspiration.  From these, I visualize a potential design and put it through a mental litmus test of fabrication practicality and artistic appeal.  Ideas that do not end up in the delete folder of my brain are usually rough sketched by hand and set aside for more development consideration.  These sketches typically have multiple design elements, which I may make rough prototypes of to verify the ability to fabricate that element.

After the design elements are proven by either previous use or prototype fabrication, the actual product is fabricated.  On detailed products, several versions of the product are likely made to get what I consider to be the right look and feel.

Once satisfied with the finished product, I carefully document its dimensions and materials so that product design, fabrication, and artistic appeal can be accurately repeated.  Only a limited number of similar products are made and no products are mass produced.  Being handmade, each product, even from the same design, has minor fabrication differences, making each piece a handmade one-of-a-kind.

All Fx N Metal products are designed and handmade in the USA!  Fxnmetal.com is the only venue for my metal sculpture/décor.

Commissioned Work

My metal sculpture/décor offering is continually growing and represents a variety of design themes.  Making optimal use of my creative abilities and giving me the ability to offer unique handmade sculpture/decor, I design and fabricate my own designs.  Considering this, I do not have the ability or resource bandwidth to accept commissioned work.
